General use in silo installation are chain conveyors and bucket elevators. Chain conveyors should be designed correctly in order to prevent grinding effect. Dropforged chainlinks are heavy, (design for mining operation) and can have this effect. Draglink chains are better suited for silo operation. Bucket elevators are the means for of choice for lifting grains. As is common knowledge and even required by law in several countries, buckets should be made of plastics, PVC, UHMWPE, and such. PE is too soft and will wear quickly. Steel buckets can produce sparks if elevators are not correctly maintained. Sparks can cause dust explosions and are known to have destroyed complete silo complexes!

Screw conveyors are for farm use, not really suited for silo storage application. Besides high wear and high energy consumption. In special occasions can be used for short distances (less 4 mtrs).

Chainconveyors should be installed with sufficient support, catwalks provide support and access for maintenance. Catwalks should have one or two safety handrail. Bucket-elevators  will very often supported by an elevator tower. If no tower is provided at least a maintenance platform is required.
